Coco Fennell Cult SS13

Ever since I first found out about Coco Fennell whilst interning at LOOK Magazine in 2011, I've been a big fan of her designs. So when I saw her tweeting about her new collection, I knew I had to see what she had come up with and share it with you guys! If you read this blog often, then you'll recognise her name from interview that I featured with her a year or two back. You can still read that interview here if you'd like to get a little bit more background on this lovely and inspiring designer, although beware as things have changed a lot on the blog since then!

Coco Fennell is a very lovely designer who is based in the equally lovely area of Shoreditch, London. She started her own label in 2010 and has since received quite a lot of attention surrounding her collections. Why you ask? well, just visit her website and you'll instantly know why.

Her SS13 collection "Cult" is said to be inspired by the "kick-ass leading ladies of her favourite cult movies" and features beautiful figure complimenting dresses which have a cool edgy mix of feminine daisies and florals, embroidered with insects and "illicit kisses". I absolutely adore them. What I love about Coco Fennell's new collection and general designs are that they beautifully and subtly accentuate our womanly figures and curves, without making it TOO obvious. Her dresses are flirty and fun and emphasize that we have hips and boobs and bums and, at the same time, celebrating them. It seems only apt that on International Women's day, we celebrate by showcasing such a role model like Coco who designs collections to make women feel good about themselves.

"Since I was a little girl I have always been obsesses by these beautiful, powerful women. I wanted to create a collection for for the Scarlet O'Hara, Wednesday Adams and Alabama Whirley in everyone."

I'm not the only one who thinks this. Her dresses are a favourite of Pixie Lott, as well as Daisy Lowe and fashion blogger, Bip Ling. Check out Coco's website to take a look at her collections: www.cocofennell.com.

Here, I caught up with Coco to chat about her new collection.

Hi Coco, it's been over a year since we last chatted to you, what's changed? Are you still based in your studio in Shoreditch?

Hey there, hehe not much has changed I have finally moved into a shared office which is in Shoreditch too which is sooo nice but it's still just me working for the brand!

Exciting times! Your new collection is called "Cult" which you say is inspired by strong women from some of your favourite films, what is it in particular with these films and the women that inspired you to create a whole collection around it?

I think there are some wonderful women with awesome style in cult movies that lots of women relate to and love...so I thought I would try to embody that! You can have anyone from Scarlet O'Hara to Cher from Clueless and though they span decades their look still stands the test of time!
Where do you find your inspirations from for the patterns and prints that you use in your collections?

Everywhere. I spend A LOT of time looking through fashion reference books, internet, blogs, vintage magazines, children's books, Museum archives but mostly it's silly things that grab me in the end!
Quite a fun way of doing it! I know you're busy, so we won't keep you long, but how long does the design process take for you to produce a beautiful dress? All the way from illustration to product?

It can take any amount of time if it's something that is perfect from the first sample it can take only 6 weeks but sometimes months and months til something is perfect!

Don't forget, you can now visit Coco's pop up shop at Unit 13  Boxpark, Shoreditch, where Coco will be selling the New Collection and sale items. She's also promised lots of sweets, neon lights, frocks and Destiny's Child blaring out the speakers.
