Even as I write this now, the words seem to escape me, stunting my sentences and creating awkward pauses and repeated deletes. Like some sort of whimsical demon, it haunts every article idea or project, not only making you doubt your own creativity but also stopping you from actually doing your job.
Many of you may know what I'm on about and, if writing is your profession like mine, more of you will understand how much of a nuisance it can be. Yes, I'm talking about Writer's Block.
For regular bloggers, it can be a challenge to come up with interesting and unique posts, especially during this current blogging industry which is now saturated with hundreds of amazing blogs. However for writers, the demon causes even more trouble as work dries up and you feel at a loss as other writers around you nab up the big titles.
So, after a little soul searching myself, I've come up with some ways in which we, as writers, can fend off the big baddy that is writer's block.
1: Keep a notebook
Every writer has one and, nowadays, most bloggers do as well. Something cute and small that will fit in your bag so you can write down any idea that pops into your head.
2: A mood board
I try and cut out some interesting articles/info that I find an stick in on my wardrobe. Sometimes, you can find different angles to the stories, plus, because you'll see it everyday, it can kick start your brain into thinking.
3: Bubble charts
Not just useful for revision! I keep little bubble charts in my notebook with different stems of information. From fashion article ideas to who I'd love to interview, the charts provide an easy way to let your mind naturally wander.
4: Ask friends what they'd like to read
This one can be quite useful as it gives you the readers perspective. As journalists or writers, we are constantly viewing things as "articles" however ideas to readers are just interests. Sometimes, you can come across some little gems...
5: Take inspiration from your life situation
An example is this article! I'm facing a little writer's block so what do I do? Write an article on writers block!
How do you get inspiration and new ideas?

The Intern Debate
Yes, unfortunately this is the reality for many young interns, this and the fact that you will probably find yourself overwhelmed with errands, emails and phone calls ( and the sudden need to buy those old granny insoles for your shoes because your feet are falling apart!)
What's more is that you are expected to do all this for maybe weeks on end, completely unpaid.
Now, it's not unheard of for a fashion intern to work for free, however the recent issues surrounding the hours that the intern is expected to do for free and the type of jobs that they have to carry out, are the topics of a new hot debate.
The reason for this is because some interns are now being expected to work up to 12 hours at a time with little prospect or job opportunity once their internships are over. It almost seems that the huge backlog of aspiring interns is providing the fashion companies with a never ending conveyor belt of young, bright eyed and eager interns who are ready to take the place of the previous. This, therefore allows the company to use and replace interns like they are designer items, never to be worn again.
So, the question arises. Should interns be paid for their work or should they remain freebies for the fashion world.
Some people are worried that if the demand pay the interns increases, then the fashion names will become more and more objective and picky when it comes to choosing the lucky few that do get to work for them and therefore, this may result with more being turned away.
On the other hand, during the current economic climate, it is simply becoming impossible for those who are not already living in London to travel and stay in the city by only relying on their own savings, and therefore the opportunities are only being given to those who live close enough and can afford to travel from home.
As a previous intern myself, I have to say that I think it comes down to the length of the job and the thoughts and expectations of the intern. If you know that the internship is unpaid and will require you to work for a number of months, then obviously this type of job is clearly taking advantage of the person who applies. It can not be seen as a bit of experience if you are spending most of your year working just as hard as the other employees but for free. This is pure exploitation. To be expected to completely shift your life to a new city and to live on pennies for a whole year, just to have an insight into a fashion company is completely to the benefit of the company. For some, this becomes far too much and they end up leaving their internship with dampened dreams.
However, I believe that the internships which last only a few weeks are completely different. With these type of internships comes the agreement of an end. The agreement that this is just a small opportunity to see the world of work and no job is promised once it's finished. This type of internship can prove invaluable. Yes, you may make tea for a lot of people but it means that when you move on to your next experience, your employee will be impressed when they see that you have actively worked for free to gain experience at another company.
It is no surprise that these internships involve making tea and answering phone calls because at the end of the day, everyone starts somewhere and you can't expect to start at the top because you wouldn't learn anything at all.
Alex Gravell, a fashion journalist and previous fashion intern believes that " Everyone has to pay their dues and put in the time somewhere. If you put in the effort it will be noticed at the end of the day" and that is something that really needs to be remembered when thinking about working in the fast and dynamic industry. If you honestly think that you have what it takes, then your hard work will pay off but when it comes to being an intern, you are there for one reason only and should not think of yourself as a much needed member of the team. You are there to learn and to grow and to experiences things which you may have only dreamed of experiencing before.
As current beauty PR intern Lucy Verity Steels says, "in fashion, you have to do unpaid work usually, but if you think you've got what it takes then there are other ways round it".
What are your views?
Keep a look out for Alice Mary Gorton's view on the subject in the next week.

Diary of an Intern- Day 10- My last Day
My two weeks at LOOK magazine went so fast. I cannot believe that I'm already back in my lovely flat. I miss the hussle and bussle of a busy fashion mag office already. I miss London and the herds of commuters. I miss the rush of it all.
My last day of LOOK, I have to say, was one of the best. I was constantly rushed of my feet, which I loved. I started my day by going to an appointment downstairs with a company who had a product that they wanted to show LOOK. It felt amazing to greet the young lady sitting in front of my and say "Hi, I'm from LOOK...". I spent a few minutes expaining to her what we like as a magazine and what our readers would love, convincing myself that I actually worked there permenantly! Then I presented the info to Catherine, the comissioning editor.
We have all been very busy this week trying to get a photographer to a girl in Libya so it's all be very exciting! While Cathering has been furiously writing the article, I was researching and typing up little bits and bobs for the features such as fact boxes and case studies. You'll see a few in the magazine on Tuesday, although obviously my name is not going to by a case study!
I went for my last lunch with all the lovely interns, Cat, Lauren and Chloe. It's going to be so weird not seeing them everyday and I'm going to miss them all so much! I regulary go over to the fashion cupboard where they are working their butts off to see which clothes and shoes I want to buy! I swear it is like clothes heaven in there! You are surrounded by gorgeous dresses, shoes and bags! I have already written my wishlist ;)
Mean as it was my last day, I bought a little thank you card for Jo and Catherine. I wrote a little message and thanked them for giving me such an amazing opportunity! I'm sure we are going to stay in touch!
So overall, I spent two weeks in my dream job, made some amazing friends (and contacts of course ;) and learnt what it was like to work on a fashion weekly. So what's next? Definetely back next year for me!
love,
Mia x

Diary of an Intern- Day 9
Home time tomorrow. I could really cry! I don't want to leave LOOK and I am so glad they asked me back!
Today, I put together all of my research for my features ideas and sent them all to Catherine. For each feature idea, you need to research every little detail, so although it may seem as though I have been doing a lot of research, I've actually been working pretty hard!
Hopefully, in a few weeks, I can actually point out to you the peices that I have helped work on or contributed to :)
I collected all the final details for my books/films/tv list that Jo asked me to compile so had a few phonecalls to SKY, Channel 4, BBC etc today. Spent a lot of time trying to make my strong welsh accent easier to understand!
What amazing was talking to Jill about London Fashion Week and she has been able to pass on my details to a few people which means I may just be able to go to at least one show! Mind you, our Fashion Soc Secretary managed to get us tickets to a red carpet event so that's amazing too!
Tomorrow is going to odd. I don't want to say good bye but I know it won't be for long because they have asked me back and I really want to!
It's really late for me now, usually I am asleep by 9! I went out for a few drinks, well one, with Cat and Lauren and so it took me a while to find my way back by tube!
Anyway,
Night all.
Remember to check out my little 200 word article in the Life Con section next week!!

Diary of an Intern- Day 8
Evening sweets!
Today was amazing! I actually have a tiny weeny Byline in LOOK! I wrote a small 200 word bit for the Life Con section about how to stay in touch with friends :) Those first 200 words are the start of my career and will hopefully open up a whole new world for me. The world is my oyster as they say.
As well as writing my little article, I also transcribed for Catherine and Kate which took up a lot of time but one of the articles really opened my eyes. It was about Libya. That's all I'll say ;). Obviously, you can get the jist of it but in true LOOK form, they are looking at the women in the conflict. Whilst listening you the young woman on the tape, it made me think about my life and how things are totally different for me. Obviously because I'm not living in the middle of a conflict but also just the society in which I live in.
Anyway, as well as transcribing, I conducting my usual research for Catherine :) It's going to be so weird not going into work every day and I'm really going to miss everyone. She has been really lovely to me since Jo went and has already said she can't wait for me to come back. This has been so amazing. I'm so grateful. Working hard pays off.

Diary of an Intern- Day 7
Good evening lovelies.
I am tucked up in bed, trying to keep my eyes open to fill you in on today's adventure!
One of my features ideas seems to be going good and Catherine sent it off to the deputy editor today to be reviewed, so, hopefully I will be able to write it up for them to have a little look at! So exciting!
As Jo is away, we have a freelance editor who is standing in called Kate. She is a very well established journalist and makes an impression on the feautres desk right away. Today, I spent the morning transcribing an interview that she had done and was in awe of the way she conducted it. Totally professional and straight to the point, she managed to ask all the right questions and create a repo with the young lady straight away!
Of course, you know that I'm not going to say who she interviewed because I love to keep you guys guessing!
Although tomorrow, a pop star is coming in to be interviewed and everyone is very excited! Last week, it was the Saturdays and now this! It's so amazing.
What is more exciting is that some of the girls went to V on the weekend and have been talking about what it was like being backstage and interviewing everyone! I am so jealous but totally in awe at them and their stories, I find myself asking so many questions about who they've managed to talk to!
Tomorrow, I hope to have a little meeting with Catherine and discuss my progress. I think it's important for me to know what I'm doing well and what I could do better so that I can improve :) All the feedback I've had so far has been so amazing and as I mentioned before, they have welcomed me back :) Catherine even said that Jo and I had bonded quickly which I loved!
With only three days left at LOOK, I want to make them all count so I am constantly aware that I won't be there for much longer. I don't want to miss any opportunities and so for the next 3 days, I am going to work even harder!
So, as I am barely winning this sleep war right now, I am heading to bed.
Night all and sleep well! I know I will!

Diary of an Intern- Day 6
I cannot believe that I have been at LOOK magazine for a week now and shall be going home in just 5 days. Even being in the office leaves me feeling inspired. I start my journey the same every week; overground to startford and then jubilee to Southwark, but everyday seems like a new day. Like my first day. I walk the pavements in complete awe of the tall buildings that overshadow me. I look at every person, every taxi, every bike and try and take it all in because I know that soon I shall be back in the Welsh valleys and all of this will just be a memory. An amazing memory.
Before I start chatting about today's antics, I have to talk about my amazing weekend with the beautiful Emily Holt. My darling cousin, who turns heads as she walks down the street, spent the weekend with me in London and we travelled around in our vintage dresses and camden clothes. We visited all the places that inspire us; Soho, Camden, Shoreditch, Convent Garden, and spent the days giggling and catching up. We rarely see eachother as we live at opposite ends of the UK but when we do, it's like we've never been apart. <3
So, to the part that you all really want to hear about. Day 6 of my fabulous time at LOOK magazine. I carried on with my research today as always (obviously a big part of writing articles) and settled into my new desk. I had to leave my old one as the Deputy Editor, Maria Coole, came back from holidays. So, in my rightful place at the features desk, I was able to talk to Catherine a lot more than before and felt like one of the team!
As well as proof reading, I also tried to come up with some more features ideas and Catherine has decided to send a few to the editor to see what she thinks! This is a big deal as the features team here very strict on what goes into to their amazing magazine so fingers crossed!
There was a lot of excitement in the office as the winners of the blog comp were going to be announced. Sadly, I didn't get shortlisted but I can hardly complain when I'm interening for them!
One of the highlights of my day today was having a lovely email from the equally lovely designer Coco Fennell, who I'd pitched as a feature to Jo :) One of Coco's dresses had been worn by a celeb at the V festival! I actually visited 123 Bethnal Green that sells Coco's dresses on the weekend and they are amazing!
You may think that I am very quiet about what exactly I research about when I write this blog. Well my sweeties, I do not want to spoil anything for you when you buy your next LOOK issue now do I! So, when I refer to work, I will always keep you guessing!
Lots of Love,
Mia xx

Diary of an Intern- Day 5
Evening lovelies,
So, I have been in London for nearly a week already and I shall be going home in just 7 days! My editor, Jo, is going to Ibiza this evening so I had a little chat with her about my work and how I've done. She was thrilled and said I could go back any time I wanted to! Nearly choked. ha.
Today, I got stuck into my research for the features articles and pitched some more ideas to Jo :) Spent a bit more time with Catherine who is going to be my "editor" next week.
Being in a place so full of fashion inspiration and people who really know what they are on about actually gave me a little boot up the bum to pluck up the courage to talk to the fashion editor about my future and things I was interested in. She is a gorgeous woman who always dresses perfectly. I have talked to a her a few times but not in much detail and because she is such an amazing woman, I was rather nervous! Anyway, in the end she was so lovely to me and gave me her card so that I can email her in the future about things. They even said I could go on a shoot next week which would be amazing!
I'm so lucky to be here.
I decided afterwards that I wanted to visit the Tate so after a brief goodbye to Jo, I made my way to the museum and absorbed all the amazing artwork. I came out of there thinking that I could paint and was determined to get my photos/art in a gallery in the future, even though I cannot draw and only ever take pictures for my albums! ha, still.
Anyway, back to LOOK. With more models turning up and clothes appearing from nowehere, I almost felt like I was in a different world. This really is my dream job. Writing and surrounded by pretty shoes, bags, hats and skirts!
Next week I shall be moving desks as the one I'm in now is the Deputy Editor's and she's currently on Holiday. I'll be moving over to the newly free desk on features so I can talk to them more and hopefully make a bit of an impact :)
For now, I am going to spend a lovely weekend with my darling cousin, adventuring down the streets of Shoreditch, Camden and Soho and hunting down some gorgeous vintage finds.
Until Monday darlings, when my dreams come true again!

Diary of an Intern- Day 4
Helly my lovely ladies,
Today has been hectic! I finally got my IPC Media Photo Pass done so I can just waltz right through the glass gates to the LOOK office :)
I had a little chat with Jo today and pitched her some of my ideas for some feautres articles and amazingly, they are doing a VERY similar piece to one of my articles so Jo has put me on this task :) She said that my thoughts are on the right track! I was basically looking for a fashion designer who uses Twitter for their business and I found a lovely young lady called Coco Fennell (check her out now!). After researching Coco, I wrote up everything I had found and pitched her to Jo and she was really pleased so now we may (likely to) feature her in LOOK :)
What really made my day today was seeing some of the potential models for the LOOK show live that all came in for a casting! I have never seen such tall, skinny and unusal looking (in a beautiful way) girls in my entire life! They were literally twice the size of me! Seeing them walking up and down the corridor with their horse knee strides amazed me and I could barely keep my eyes off them all afternoon. I wondered if girls like this just KNOW that they are going to be a model when they are younger. I mean, when you see a catwalk model, they all kinda look the same don't you think? Tall and beautiful? One girl was about 17 and was already about 6ft!
I spent my dinner with a fashion intern and we chatted about going to the Tate Gallery tomorrow :)
and my cousin is arriving in London on Saturday :)
Having the time of my life!
I don't want to leave now, although, I am missing my family, boyfriend and friends so so much.
Hope you are all enjoying my little updates!

Diary of an Intern- Day 2
London is a weird place, full of suits and heels and people who have the ability to walk around the underground whilst still reading their latest book. I feel like such a small town girl (cue Journey) in a massive city, swamped by the concrete skyscrapers that are towering over me.
Making my way into the office, I pick up my LOOK pass (you litterally cannot even go into the toilet here without a pass!) and confidently head for the LOOK doors.
I already feel like I've worked here for months as I sit at my desk and read my emails. Jo pops over to say morning and I go through my daily routine of reading newspapers and making calls.
I spend most of my day phoning around SKY, BBC, ITV and Channel 4 to see what releases there are lined up for Autumn 2011 so that all the writers are up to date!
After Lunch, I had a little chat with Jo (who is wearing a gorgeous long pleated Blue maxi skirt) and she gives me some projects to work on for tomorrow. (if you want to know what, then buy the magazine ;) ). She also gives me some advice and asks me about what kind of things I love doing, so I casually slip in that I'm President of Cardiff Fashion Society and she says I could go on a fashion shoot with the girls!
Lush!
I end the day by talking to assisstant Editor, Claire, who just happends to originally from Aberycynon (which is a town in the Welsh Valleys near my hometown!). She gives me some great advice on what to do in the future and where to go for further study!
After work, I head to Oxford Circus to find some cute little office shoes. I feel so small in the office that I think I need some little heels to boost me up! Being 5ft 2 has its disadvantages! However, I fail at my mission and head home back to Hackney whilst singing Professor Green's "Jungle" in my head- repeating the line "Welcome to Hackney". Life is good.
Till next time my lovelies!
xx
Cannot wait for Day 3!
Making my way into the office, I pick up my LOOK pass (you litterally cannot even go into the toilet here without a pass!) and confidently head for the LOOK doors.

Diary of a Intern- Day 1 at LOOK Magazine
Standing outside the enormous Blue Fin building in Central London, my legs were shaking. The huge sky scraper was daunting itself, but wait awaited me instead scared me even more. I was about to embark on a new journey in my work experience life. 2 Weeks internship at the famous and much loved LOOK magazine! I knew as soon as I walked through the doors, I would be in fashion heaven, but the thought of entering such a respected magazine made my heart skip a beat!
As I walked through the rotating doors (love them, such a child!), I made my way to reception to collect my pass (ahh I know!) then I headed up to the seventh floor of the magnificant building. Working towards the glass doors, I saw signs for In Style mag and then LOOK! My nerves dissappeared the moment I walked in. It was everything I had expected it to be. It was like being on the set of Ugly Betty and I suddenly turned into my normal relaxed (ish) self!
There to meet me was Features Editor, Jo Adnitt, who towered over me in her gorgeous heels. She was so friendly and showed me around the whole office, including the amazing 11th floor canteen!
I was given a desk and started work. As some of the articles had already been written this week, I was set the task of finding some more info on a new feature. The article looked at the big question about degrees and whether or not we needed them anymore and so I had to find some inspirational women who had made it without a degree in their back pocket. It took a lot longer than I thought!
Whilst working throughout the day, the stylist team working beside me were busy getting outfits together for The Saturday's shoot. I open mouthingly gazed at clothes which had come flowing in from all different high street shops. From sequins to brogues, I was totally in awe!
Then at lunch time, I headed up to the canteen for a cosmopolitan lunch. With chefs on hand and a view of Canary Wharf, I must say I had the perfect dinner! I even rushed back down to my office because I was so eager to get back!
After Lunch, Jo gave me an ongoing task to find out some new information for features articles, so, I got to work straight away again.
I cannot wait until tomorrow!

Wardrobe of an Intern
Sitting her watching my daily dose of Doctors (Yes, I am a huge fan) I have been day-dreaming about my outfit for London. With only a few days left before I hit the big city for my 2 week placement at LOOK magazine, my thoughts have obviously turned to "What on earth am I going to wear?!".
As an intern, you are expected to run around, pick up things, phone people and do the odd job so your outfit needs to be practical but OBVIOUSLY fashionable.
So I have been hunting the rails for the perfect first day outfit, and here is it:
I've kept it casual smart but still ready for the office with the flat shoes and big bag. The skirt length is below the knee (professional) and the top covers the cleavage.
What do you think?
